The unofficial results from Dane County showed very close margins on the four school referendum questions, but only one of the resolutions so far has received enough support to pass.
According to preliminary results at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, it appeared voters have approved a project to add on to Waunakee High School. Question 2 asked voters to approve an $8.45 million addition to the school; voters gave the okay, and the question passed by just 48 votes; 1,971 voted for the addition; 1,923 voted against it. Results were not available for the Madison wards in the school district.
The tallies for the various municipalities were as follows: Town of Dane: 16 yes, 13 no; Town of Springfield: 15 yes, 102 no;
Town of Vienna: 89 yes, 141 no; Town of Westport: 364 yes, 459 no; Village of Waunakee wards 1-4: 612 yes, 513 no; Village of Waunakee wards 8-14: 839 yes, 695 no.
Each of the other three referendum questions failed by slim margins. Question 1, which asked permission to build an elementary school, received 2,004 no votes with 1893 voting for it. Voters in both sets of Waunakee wards voted in favor by 588-583 in one and 826-711 in the other. However, voters in all of the other municipalities voted against the proposal.
Question 3, seeking to exceed the revenue cap, also failed to win voter approval, receiving 2064 nay votes to 1812 yea. It won approval in only Waunakee wards 8-14 by 770-758.
Question 4, also seeking to exceed the revenue cap to fund maintenance, also failed by a slim margin with 1,996 votes against to 1,882 votes in favor. It passed in both Waunakee sets of wards, 574-545 in one and 790-743 in the other.
School board election
Waunakee school district voters also decided on three of four candidates in the race for the school board. Challenger Karla Homan received the most votes with 1,841 to win a bid for the three-year seat.
Incumbent Paul Meese received 1,720 votes, while Tryg Knutson received 1,654. Julie Waner was edged out of the race, receiving 1,636 votes.
Gary Epping had declared himself a write-in candidate representing the towns of Dane and Springfield, but official canvas results are not yet available.
Town of Vienna
Two new supervisors will join the Town of Vienna Board in the newly created supervisor seats there.
In the race for Supervisor III, Gary Endres turned back Lonnie Breggeman by a tally of 161-149.
Jonathan Marquardt won the race for the Supervisor IV seat, receiving 134 votes compared to David Kaltenberg’s 83. A write-in campaign for Kim Hahn generated 101 votes.
